Examples of answers given by students in the assessment of the knowledge about macroevolution. When asked about what could explain the similarities between an insular (the Azores bullfinch, Pyrrhula murina (Priôlo in Portuguese)) and a continental (the bullfinch, Pyrrhula pyrrhula (Dom-Fafe in Portuguese)) bird species, more than one-third of the students correctly referred their shared ancestry (A, B, C).
