Distribution of evolutionary terms in different content units of three best-selling biology textbooks for undergraduates in the United States. As is apparent, the three textbooks have similar content structures. We compared the frequency and distribution of evolutionary concepts within each unit and among textbooks. The unit names are similar but not identical to those in the texts. Textbook units are presented in chronological order (i.e., they begin with “Chemistry and Early Life” and end with “Ecology”. Note that evolutionary terms and concepts are largely restricted to the evolution and diversity units of all three textbooks
